Get involved

Those of you who know our work know that a lot of what we’ve done the last few years is direct service work, with some high level digital security trainings. The last year we are pleased to have been able to support others in learning this work with a number of more advanced trainings around dox defense and other digital security practices relevant for activists in today’s movement. After a few proof-of-concept trainings, we are now going to be offering regular webinars on a few of these topics! Initial offerings include:

Dox defense for activists

Rapid response dox support
...

Dox Defense Fund

Greetings, internet community!

We’re having a fundraiser to support our ongoing dox defense work. If we make our goal, we’ll spend 10% of the total on infrastructure, but the rest is all going directly to activists.

One of the hardest things about preventing doxxing is that if you miss one data broker in your cleanup efforts, and your attacker finds it, all of your efforts are wasted. And there are a bajillion data brokers out there. Naturally this leads to paranoia and overly obsessive security culture, which can be crippling to a movement. Luckily, you can cut down...

Co-creating in non-hierarchical teams

A lot of our work is done by volunteers who come from different backgrounds, many of whom are not “technical” in the conventional sense. We believe that this work is only tangentially technical, and at it’s core, this work is about building community and protecting one another. In our teams, we want to create space for everyone to show up with their own skills, to teach others and to learn from others. We also want to avoid replicating the toxic, oppressive elements of tech culture, such as the side-lining of “soft skills” (among many other things).

Often volunteers...

Slides from the Anarchist Book Fair training

Last weekend we had a lovely time hanging out at the Boston Anarchist Book Fair. If you have never been, we highly recommend checking it out next year. We also put on a cybersecurity workshop focusing on doxxing. While most of us might feel paranoid about massive corporations and the state snooping on us all the time, for most people the clear and present danger is doxxing.

During the “hands-on” portion of our training, we had people look up their email addresses on pipl.com and their phone number on whitepages reverse phone search. Have you ever tried...

Clearing data brokers and locking down Facebook

We have been gradually building up some resources on our wiki. There are lots of great resources out there, but they often assume the risk level is “an elite hacker and/or the FBI is specifically watching me”, which is not typically the case. Most people just want to avoid being harassed by assholes on the internet. Nowadays, you don’t even have to be an activist to have this worry, you can show up at a protest or sign a petition, or even just piss off an individual alt-right member (check out the shitstorm that Google...

We’ve migrated to this amazing spacemacs theme, and it’s clearly worthy of blogging, so we will get around to that real soon. In the meantime, learn some spacemacs keyboard commands!
